The Redondo Beach Squid Run is Coming
Posted by Dive Professional Jason on on Dec 3rd 2023
Squid runs, also known as squid migrations or spawning aggregations, occur when squid gather in large numbers to reproduce. This phenomenon is often seasonal and can attract marine life and divers looking to witness the spectacle. For the LA area this happens late December.
- Thrilling Atmosphere: The sheer number of squid congregating for spawning creates a thrilling atmosphere underwater. The water may be filled with thousands of squid moving in coordinated patterns, creating a spectacular and almost otherworldly environment.
- Bioluminescence: Many squid species are bioluminescent, meaning they can produce light. This can add to the enchantment of the dive, especially if you're diving at night. The underwater display of bioluminescent squid can be a breathtaking sight.
- Interaction with Marine Life: Squid runs attract not only other squid but also a variety of marine life looking for a meal.
- Night Diving Experience: Squid are often more active at night, so diving during a squid run may involve night diving. Night diving itself is a unique experience as it provides a different perspective on marine life and enhances the visibility of bioluminescent displays.
- Photographic Opportunities: The unique and vibrant underwater environment during a squid run provides excellent opportunities for underwater photography. The intricate patterns and movements of the squid, combined with the ambient light, can result in stunning images.
