Why You Should Take a Scuba Refresher Before Your Next Dive Trip
Posted by Ashley L. on on Apr 6th 2026
If it’s been a while since your last dive, you’re not alone - some divers go months (or even years) between trips. But scuba skills fade quickly, especially buoyancy control, equipment setup, and safety procedures. That’s exactly why both PADI and SDI offer refreshers, and why Eco Dive Center runs a Scuba Refresher Pool Session every Saturday, year-round.
Whether you’re heading to Catalina, preparing for a dream dive trip, or simply want to feel confident again, a refresher helps you get back underwater safely and stress-free.
What Is a Scuba Refresher?
A scuba refresher is a quick, low-pressure training session designed for already-certified divers who want to brush up on:
• Buoyancy and body positioning
• Air-sharing and safety skills
• Mask clearing and equalization
• Ascents/descents
• Gear setup and weight checks
It’s not a test - it’s a confidence-building tune-up led by a professional instructor who works at your pace.
We’ve had certified divers who haven’t been in the water for 6 months… and others who took a 10-year break. Everyone leaves feeling better than when they walked in.
When Should You Take a Refresher?
Most divers should take a refresher if:
• It’s been 6+ months since your last dive
• You only dive on vacations
• You learned in cold water but are diving warm water (or vice versa)
• You feel even a little unsure about your skills
• You’re planning a trip where conditions may be new to you
Your future dive buddy (and your dive operator) will appreciate it - and so will you.
How Our Scuba Refresher Works (Step-by-Step)
Here’s exactly what to expect, so you can feel fully prepared:
1. Sign Up In-Shop or Over the Phone
Because our classes run every Saturday, spots fill quickly. You can register:
• In the shop (recommended if you want gear fitted right away)
• Over the phone (quick and easy)
2. Pick Up Your Rental Gear During the Week
Your refresher includes rental gear at no extra cost.
Just stop by anytime during the week before your scheduled session. We’ll size you for:
• BCD
• Regulator
• Wetsuit
• Mask, snorkel, fins
• Weights (if needed)
We take our time to make sure everything fits comfortably - this alone reduces a ton of pre-dive anxiety.
3. Your Instructor Will Text You 1–2 Days Before
We send a text with:
• Exact class start time
• Pool address
• What to bring
• Any last-minute weather or facility notes
Pro tip: read the text - your instructor will often include helpful reminders that make your class smoother.
4. Meet at the Pool on Saturday
You’ll spend time practicing skills at your own pace in a warm, shallow-water environment. We focus on:
• Buoyancy
• Air sharing
• Mask skills
• Regulator recovery
• Controlled ascents
• Emergency procedures
