Knowing how and when to administer emergency oxygen can make a critical difference during a dive or water-related emergency.

The Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Certification Course prepares you to recognize diving injuries and illnesses that may require emergency oxygen and gives you hands-on training in the proper setup and administration of oxygen during an emergency.

This is a valuable certification for scuba divers, dive professionals, boat crew, lifeguards, freedivers, mermaids, and anyone who spends time in or around the water and may be called upon to assist in an emergency.

Who This Course Is For

  • Scuba divers
  • Dive professionals and boat staff
  • Lifeguards and other water-safety professionals
  • Freedivers, mermaids, and snorkelers
  • Anyone who may need to administer emergency oxygen

Course Prerequisites

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Students as young as 10 may participate with parental consent
  • No scuba certification required
  • No pool or ocean training required

What You Will Learn

The Emergency Oxygen Provider course trains layperson rescuers to recognize and respond to diving-related emergencies using emergency oxygen.

Training includes:

  • Recognizing signs and symptoms of decompression illness (DCI)
  • Recognizing and evaluating an emergency and injured person
  • Activating Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  • Selecting and preparing emergency oxygen equipment
  • Proper administration of emergency oxygen
  • Providing oxygen to breathing and non-breathing individuals
  • Understanding different oxygen delivery systems
  • Responding appropriately while awaiting professional medical care
  • Hands-on practice using emergency oxygen equipment

Training follows current emergency care standards, including OSHA and ILCOR guidelines.

How the Course Works

Your certification includes two components: online academics and in-person skills training.

Step 1 – eLearning

After registering for the course, you will receive your online learning materials. Complete the academics before attending your in-person training session.

Step 2 – In-Person Skills Training

You will meet with an Eco Dive Center instructor to complete the hands-on portion of the course, practice setting up and operating emergency oxygen equipment, and demonstrate the required emergency response skills.

Taking the Course on Its Own

If you are taking the Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty as a standalone course, complete your eLearning after registration and then call Eco Dive Center to schedule your in-shop training session with an instructor.

The hands-on portion will be completed at the dive shop at a scheduled time.

Taking It With Rescue & EFR Training

Students completing Emergency Oxygen Provider alongside our Rescue Diver and Emergency First Response (EFR) training will complete the oxygen provider skills as part of their EFR training session.

The EFR portion of our Rescue program is normally held in the evening on the third Tuesday of each month.

This makes it easy to complete your emergency oxygen certification alongside your broader rescue and emergency response training.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the academics and hands-on skills session, you will earn your Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Certification and be better prepared to recognize a diving emergency, activate EMS, and provide emergency oxygen until additional medical assistance arrives.
